Distinguished atmospheric scientist Knut Stamnes
An internationally known researcher, Knut Stamnes is recognized for his work on the measurement and impact of atmospheric readiation. Stamnes began his career in upper atmospheric physics and has since specialized in atmospheric radiation, remote sensing, and climate-related studies. Before coming to Stevens, he was at the Universities of Alaska, Tromsø, Colorado, and Bergen and at the Geophysical Institute/UAF. He was a member of the Science Working Group for Surface Heat and Energy Budget of the Arctic Ocean, site scientist for the U.S. Department of Energy's Arctic Atmospheric Radiation Measurements group, and a science team member for the Japanese ADEOS Program. Stamnes receives substantial support for his research, principally from the National Science Foundation. His work has also been funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, National Aeronautics and Space Agency, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. In addition to publishing more than 100 research papers, he is the co-author of Radiative Transfer in the Atmosphere and Ocean (Cambridge University Press, 1999). Stamnes earned his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in physics from the University of Oslo and his Ph.D. in Astro-Geophysics from the University of Colorado.
