Sustainable Engineering Graduate Certificate

Program Director
Keith Sheppard

Sustainable engineering addresses how engineers work to improve the environment and recognize finite resources as they develop or manufacture products and systems. The Stevens program provides a holistic, systems perspective to the impact of human activity on the environment and  the role of engineering in minimizing that impact. It discusses the concepts of sustainable development and industrial ecology, while providing insight into sustainability tools and metrics such as life cycle analysis and ecological footprint. Students will learn how engineering decisions, particularly with regard to design, can support sustainability goals. In addition, awareness of the ethical, economic, social and political dimensions that influence sustainability will be developed.

The five-course graduate certificate in Sustainable Engineering includes a range of topics both core and elective, including  focus areas in environmental engineering, green construction, alternative energy and green manufacturing. The Certificate program is targeted to students who have a bachelors degree in an engineering field.  Students with an alternate technical background may be accepted based on review. Typically this would include college level science and calculus-based mathematics, and otherwise meet all course prerequisites for the courses in the student’s planned program of study.  Students must work with their academic advisor to determine a study plan.

This Certificate is a new program and only a limited number of the courses approved for the program are available online at this time.
